The world premiere of the film “Melania” brought President Donald Trump and the First Lady together on the red carpet, but Trump seemed unable to remember where his wife was actually from.
The documentary, in which Amazon invested $40 million, follows Melania Trump in 2025 as she prepares for another four years in the White House, offering audiences a carefully curated look at the life of the first family.
At the premiere, which was held Thursday night at the new Trump Kennedy Center, things got awkward on the red carpet when reporters asked President Trump how he felt about his wife’s film, for which she was reportedly paid $28 million. He said he was “proud” of Melania because of her background, but then stopped short of mentioning where she came from.
In response to questions, Trump spoke at length about his wife’s country of origin, but he had difficulty remembering exactly where the woman he has been married to for 20 years was born. “She comes from a faraway and beautiful place. It’s clean, beautiful and safe. She doesn’t have the problems that others have. She comes from a very safe and very good place,” the president said.
Although he could not specify her homeland, Trump praised her intelligence. “She’s different, she speaks many languages, she’s very smart and she understands what’s going on. And she’s a good influence on me,” he added.
Many of those who followed the prime minister noticed the president’s gaffe.
