Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the US aims to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by early summer, despite talks so far not having brought progress on issues of territory and security guarantees.
He said Washington wants a clear deadline and has proposed a meeting between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in the US, possibly in Miami, which Ukraine has confirmed.
Zelensky stressed that any agreement must include security guarantees and that Ukraine will not accept decisions about it without its participation, while Russia continues to demand the handover of Donbas, which Kiev rejects.
Zelensky’s statements came at the same time as a major Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, using over 400 drones and about 40 missiles.
The attacks caused major damage to the energy grid and widespread power outages in many regions, including Lviv, Rivne, Kiev and Kharkiv, while temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
Ukrainian authorities announced emergency outages and said crews would begin repairs as soon as the security situation allowed.
